Behind the scenes: Silver ring making workshop

workshops, make your won silver ring, the process

With two ring making workshops scheduled and filling up fast I thought I’d share a bit more about what they entail. In a few words; fun with friends and strangers alike, delicious snacks and a silver ring you get to treasure forever.

It all begins with an excited inspection of all the familiar and unfamiliar tools neatly laid out on a large communal table. I then give you a brief introduction into the process, keeping it as short as possible because fingers are already itching to get started.

The crafting process takes the form of carving your own design in a specially formulated jeweller's wax. It has a finger hole already conveniently drilled out of the centre which you can then enlarge using a special tool to make it the perfect fit for your finger (if you’re making a ring for a loved one please find out their ring size before the workshop).

The design of your ring is completely up to you, are you more of a chunky or delicate jewellery wearer? Do you like quite rough and organic looking, or is there a great love of symmetry living within you? When you sign up for the workshop I will send you an email with a link to a Pinterest page for inspiration so if all this design freedom seems a little overwhelming never fear, I have you covered.

After a few hours of happy carving, chatting and comparing progress your ring will exist as a beautiful blue wax model. I’m afraid at this point you’re going to have to part with it. I take it to cast in recycled silver, transforming your creation into a sterling silver ring that looks just like all those ones with the gaspingly high price tags you spot in the shops. Your ring then gets the executive treatment in our studio and is beautifully polished (or given a matte texture as you prefer) and couriered back to you within 3-4 weeks to show off to all your friends.
